WHAT IS A FOUTA or PESHTAMAL TOWEL? - The Riviera Towel Company

WHAT IS A FOUTA or PESHTAMAL TOWEL?

Peshtemal or Foutas are not your average terry cloth towels. (Though they are just as absorbent ) A peshtamal (sometimes peshtemal is also spelled pestemal or peshtamal) is also called hamman or fouta towel.  Peshtemals are large, flat and velvety soft. Inspired by the bath towels used in historic Turkish spas, these tightly woven textiles are extremely strong and machine washable, and feature a stylish handcrafted tassel that makes them chic as well as useful.   Because peshtamal towels are flat-woven, they’re extremely light and take up very little space, making them the perfect travel companion. Peshtamals are the ideal take-along for your next vacation, you can roll them up and they pack beautifully. They’re also wonderfully versatile. Of course, they make fabulous bathroom towels. But you can just as easily wear your peshtemal as a poolside or beachside wrap. Many a celebrity has been spotted wearing one along the beaches of St. Tropez and Cannes (think Jennifer Aniston, Steven Spielberg, Robert De Niro and Demi Moore). The can be worn around the body like a sarong or pareo, for a chic cover-up. It’s light and airy and feels great against your skin! Peshtamal towels also look fabulous draped over the shoulders on a cool summer evening. And they double up nicely as home textiles like table runners, sofa throws and even impromptu picnic blankets. Our peshtamal towels are made from the finest Turkish cotton. They’re luxurious, absorbent and quick drying, and maintain their shape and texture beautifully, even after several washings. Choose from our selection of peshtemal / fouta towels in navy, beige or gray to find the one that suits you best. Better yet, try them all, then mix and match when the mood strikes. See for yourself why the fabulous peshtamal has been popular around the world for centuries.

Falling in love with Turkish Towels - The Riviera Towel Company

Falling in love with Turkish Towels

Get Ready for Winter! It's Hot Tub Season! Falling in love with Turkish Towels :)  Turkish Towels are made of 100% cotton, so they are known for being very soft. The cotton actually softens with wear, so after washes you won't believe how they feel. Wash your Turkish Towel in cold water and let it air dry. Follow up with ironing your towel (YES, you read that right--IRON your towel, but only before the first use). Following these steps before your first use will ensure your Turkish Towel gets even softer after every use. When it comes to style, Turkish beach towels beat traditional terrycloth. The designs and colors of Turkish cotton are much more appealing than other typical terrycloth beach or bath towels. Turkish towels often use pastels instead of harsh tones, as well as simpler patterns like stripes or triangles. These small changes have a large impact in making your hot tub and pool area stylish and sophisticated. Since the designs are colorful and on some the textures are very appealing, our Turkish Towels will compliment your outdoor decor in many ways. Throw them over a chaise, roll them up and display them in a basket or artistic container by the pool. Use them as a table cloth, or our favorite alternative use for our dog bed covers :)  Not only are the towels very soft and stylish, they are also way more practical. The towels are typically larger, so they cover more of the sand and you! Even though they usually cover more surface area, the thin material actually collapses into a smaller size. This makes it easy to wrap up and neatly tuck away into a purse or beach bag. Overall, the Turkish beach towel is still the best towel for your winter Hot Tub adventures. Along with being your best friend at the beach, Turkish Towels have many other purposes. The lightweight material is pretty and versatile enough to be used for a wrap or tapestry. They are also great on hikes, at parks, and for festivals. Turkish Towels are versatile and have lots of uses! Now let’s have a look at all the different uses of a Turkish towel: Bath Towel – And they can actually wrap around you for optimal post-shower cover-up. Travel Beach Towel – Because they’re big and absorbent, yet dry in the sun super fast. Sarong– A sarong also serves many of these purposes, but the typical sarong lacks the absorbency of Turkish cotton. Blanket – For the couch, planes, trains and other situations where you might need a nap. Picnic blanket or table cloth – Impromptu picnics will look like planned events when you break out the Turkish Towels and use them as your table cloth or picnic blanket! Tie your Turkish Towel into a beach bag – No need to pack an extra bag. You can tie a couple of knots and the towel is now a bag. Camping – Perfect for rolling up and putting in your pack for a hike! Since they dry quickly you won't be lugging around a heavy, wet and smelly towel! Hair Towels - unlike the traditional heavy terrycloth towel, the Turkish Towel will wrap up your hair and absorb water much quicker! And it won't fall off your head! In fact, it is so light weight you may forget your are even wearing it! We have a very limited quantity of hair sized towels. Scarf– Yep, you can wear it when you’re chilly. Baby Blanket – You can swaddle that little one in a Turkish towel. So to summarize, towels from the big box stores won't give you all that a Turkish Towel does. Remember: They’re thin. Even though they are cotton, they dry fairly quickly. They actually cover you up. The size is not even comparable to traditional beach towels, but since the material is thin, they still pack up small. They’re soft on your skin. Unlike the sticky feeling of other towels, the fluffy thread of Turkish cotton makes these towels a comfort unlike any other travel towel. Absorbency is high. All thanks to Turkish cotton. Designs vary and each store will have limited quantities. So get your towel soon! We've chosen colors and textures that we believe our customers will love! Imagine having pool towels that not only look fabulous, but do not need to be thrown in the dryer after every swim! Heavy, wet beach towels can take forever to dry! Save money and energy by using Turkish Towels!

The Importance of a Towel, from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy -

The stylish versatility of our Turkish towels is really out of this world. Don't leave the Galaxy with out yours ;) The importance of the towel was introduced in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy original radio series in 1978. The follow-up book explained the importance of towels in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy universe in Chapter 3, using much of the same wording as the original radio series: A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapours; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-bogglingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you — daft as a brush, but very very ravenous); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.

Riviera Towel Wash & Care Tips - The Riviera Towel Company

Riviera Towel Wash & Care Tips

If you take care of your Riviera towel it will give you years of endless use –  just follow these simple washing instructions.   We recommend a gentle or normal cycle using cold or warm water and at least two washes before use to ensure maximum absorbency. Avoid fabric softeners—they contain silicon that will make the towels water repellent.  Gentle tumble machine drying or air drying is both an option. If you live in a warm climate the towels can easily be air dried.  If your towel is not dirty you can simply rinse in water without detergent. Great for after the beach or pool session. If your Turkish Towel has snagged and pulled out threads, simply cut the thread off. This will not damage the integrity of your towel. All tassels on Riviera Towels are hand knotted and with use may begin to unravel. These can be easily knotted by making two sections and twisting each section clockwise until fully twisted. Simply finish the process by tying a knot at the end. To maximize the absorbency and softness of a towel, add a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle, about every six weeks, to restore the towel to full absorbency and softness. The vinegar removes any excess detergent, which can affect the towels' absorbency. It is also recommend washing and drying without other garments that have buttons or zippers, which can catch and snag the tassels.   Ciao, Riviera Towel Company
